This popular book, now in its fifth edition, is a lively interpretive history that continues to be one of Oxford's most successful books. Modern Latin America, 5/e has been thoroughly revised and expanded. The authors have added socio-cultural sections and boxes to nearly every chapter. It covers such diverse areas as the Argentine Tango, Santería in Cuba, and the recent boom in the popularity of Latin music in the United States, all of which give this edition a distinctly new and exciting flavor. All political and economic information has been brought up-to-date and, as in earlier editions, the authors use an in-depth case study approach that guides readers through the major countries of South America, highlighting central themes including European-New World interaction, racial mixtures, military takeovers, and U.S. intervention in the area.

About the Author:

Thomas E. Skidmore is Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Professor of Modern Latin American History and Director of the Center for Modern Latin American Studies at Brown University.
Peter H. Smith is Professor of Political Science, Simón Bolívar Professor of Latin American Studies, and Director of Latin American Studies at the University of California, San Diego.
Review:
"Skidmore and Smith's Modern Latin America has long been considered the standard source on the economic, political, and institutional history of contemporary Latin America. The fifth edition reflects recent changes in the region, and the text is enlivened by the inclusion of new illustrations and updated maps, tables, charts, and bibliographic essays. An attractive new feature is the addition of set-off quotes drawn from primary and secondary sources to highlight central issues such as machismo, political and social movements, and economic theory. The new edition provides a firm foundation for undergraduate courses on modern Latin America."--Judith Bieber, University of New Mexico
