“One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequaled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories.” —The Guardian

When a public tragedy threatens to expose a scandal within the Paris government, the Minister of Public Works calls in a favor to Maigret

A public project has collapsed and resulted in the death of 128 children after a report warning officials about the unsafe structure was disregarded. Now, that report has resurfaced, along with allegations that several politicians and contractors involved with the project may have suppressed its findings to avoid a scandal.

Maigret must enter the shifty world of politics, dodged by members of the security police wherever he goes. In an unfamiliar world of decadent diplomatic officials, fanatic followers of political parties, and suspicious staff in politicians’ entourages, Maigret grimly sticks to what he knows best: finding the perpetrators of criminal acts.

About the Author:
Georges Simenon (1903–1989) was born in Liège, Belgium. He is best known in the English-speaking world as the author of the Inspector Maigret books. His prolific output of more than four hundred novels and short stories has made him a household name in continental Europe.
From AudioFile:
Some 30 actors, including Charles Laughton and Gerard Depardieu, have portrayed the fictional Parisian police detective Jules Ma"gret in French, English, German, Japanese, Italian, and American dramatizations. The BBC has adapted Simenon's mysteries to both radio and television. Ironically, the writer who did the TV versions, the late Giles Cooper, is Britain's greatest radio playwright, while the various dramatists on the radio programs are undistinguished. No wonder then that this anthology of four cases, produced for radio in 1977, lacks verve and personality. Nonetheless, if you don't mind the cast sounding more English than French, you'll appreciate the easy grace and professionalism of the production, the high quality of the acting, and the clever plotting of the stories. The prolific Maurice Denham is an easy-going, world-weary Ma"gret, who relates his adventures to Michael Gough, a distinguished classical thespian playing a sympathetic, urbane Simenon. Book Description Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A gripping novel about the corrupt and avaricious world of politics, newly translated as part of the Maigret series. Was Maigret wrong? From one point of view, certainly, because he had nothing to gain but everything to lose in confronting as powerful and wily a man as Mascoulin. The latter, on his feet, was proffering his hand. In a flash, Maigret remembered Point and his 'dirty hands' stance. He didn't stop to weigh up the pros and the cons but grabbed his coffee cup, which was empty, and raised it to his lips, ignoring the outstretched hand. The politician's eyes clouded. The quivering at the corner of his mouth intensified.Inspector Maigret is drawn into the unsavoury world of politics and cover-up scandals when he is called to the home of the Minister of Public Works on unofficial business.
