The lengthy title poem of this collection has enjoyed a certain succes de scandale in England. To the American taste it seems a clumsy, vulgar, and willfully repetitive study of British inner-city deterioration, in which the graffiti and speech of lager louts are adopted as the rhetoric of the poem. Caught between his political sympathies with the lumpen vandals and his not unreasonable resentment at finding his parents' tomb defaced, the poet fumes and tries to make sense of it all, and ends up blaming society. The contradictions between Harrison's working-class roots and the bourgeois business of being a successful litterateur in Thatcher's Britain now seem to constrict his poetry rather than charging it with creative tension, as was the case with his earlier Selected Poems ( LJ 7/87). Still, an important purchase for comprehensive British literature collections.
