Here at last is a guide to winning at golf that tells you how to dominate your opponents -- not by out-playing them, but by out-thinking them. Golf is so complex and demanding a game, so fickle and perverse, that even its masters never really master it. But, Jon Winokur assures us in this entertaining and eminently practical manual, if you can't play golf consistently well, you can at least win consistently. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, Winokur provides various tried and true gamesmanship techniques with which to gain the advantage, from the most subtle psychological warfare to the carefully stifled sneeze.

Filled with wry humor, peppered with tips, quotes, and anecdotes from golf's greats, and illustrated throughout, this book is indispensable for anyone who would win at golf without actually playing well.

Review:
"Golf is a cruel game," author Jon Winokur insists. It's not possible to play consistently well, but it is possible to win consistently. How? Gamesmanship. Ploys. Gambits. A well-timed sneeze can be the difference between triumph and failure. Gear up for psychological warfare on the links with How to Win at Golf: Without Actually Playing Well.

The idea is simple: "Break your opponent's concentration and you destroy his game." Master gamesman Winokur offers up time-tested ways to shift your opponent's focus away from golf. Not by cheating--nothing so blatant and unseemly. Rather, unsettle your adversary with ego work ("reinforce [your opponent's] secret belief that his book shots are anomalies," thus creating a victim mentality); scare tactics ("raise the prospect that your opponent may encounter a poisonous snake when he enters the woods or a deep rough to search for his ball"); self-congratulation (bellowing "I'm da man!" after a particularly good shot); or asking about his swing thoughts: "If your opponent doesn't have a swing thought, he'll wonder if he should get one. If he does have a swing thought, he'll question its effectiveness." Each gambit and ploy is described in detail; many with examples of pros admitting to similar tactics, and many have both "high road" and "low road" versions. There's even an escape clause should you find yourself playing against someone who has also read the book: "Identify yourselves to each other by means of the code words 'Titanic Thompson.' Then bow out of the match." Funny as well as educational, How to Win at Golf is well worth extended study. --M. Stein

"A wonderful book that has defined my morbid curiosity into golf. . . . If you can't be good at this game, bring everyone down to your level by using a whole arsenal of subtle hints to your opponents that will have them seeking clinical help by the end of the round. That's what this game is really about."
-- Gary McCord, CBS Sports
