The bestselling author of Gideon reinvents Hitchcock's classic thriller formula in this sophisticated and suspenseful novel about an innocent man caught up in events past and present way beyond his control, and thrown into a terrifying maelstrom of deceit and murder.

As a young boy, Jack Keller witnessed a life-altering tragedy the murder of his mother. Thirty years later, Jack has it all a great marriage, a successful chain of restaurants bearing his name, lifelong friends, and good health. But in one second and with one bullet it all becomes worthless when a second tragedy occurs during the opening of a new restaurant. As Jack recovers from his injuries and the resulting psychological trauma, he is nursed back to health by Kid Demeter, a mysterious young man who was once as close to Jack as any son could be. As Kid trains his mentor and father figure, he confides in Jack about the various women in his life. Each one is identified only by her nickname and each one is presented as appealing, sexy...and extremely dangerous. And then a third tragedy occurs. Kid is found sprawled on the pavement after plunging twenty stories to his death.

Jack refuses to accept the police theory of suicide. Convinced that one of Kid's women is a killer, he finds himself searching for answers in Kid's world, a world of lap dancing and after- hours clubs, of drugs and violence and overwhelming sensuality. But as Jack's suspicions arise, as he draws closer to the truth, an unknown threat lurks just ahead of him, anticipating his every move and killing whoever is in the way. As past and present merge, as Kid's world overtakes Jack's, as Jack begins to understand just how high the stakes are in the game he has elected to play, he knows only one thing for certain: he must find the killer before the killer finds him. Following up the success of Gideon, Icarus is a truly Hitchcockian thriller of an innocent man pursued by an almost unimaginable and unstoppable danger.

Review:
As a child, Jack Keller watched a madman hurl his mother through a high-rise window to her death. Thirty years later, another senseless act of violence takes the life of his wife and nearly finishes him. Now his friend and physical therapist, the enigmatic Kid Demeter, has apparently taken his own life. But was it really suicide? And what does his death have to do with the team, the women in Demeter's life, each known to Jack only by a series of curious nicknames? In Icarus, Russell Andrews's diabolical, fast-paced thriller, Keller will discover the awful truth of the tragedy that has dogged his life--if he can solve the mystery of the team before the killer can catch him.

Icarus is the second novel by Russell Andrews, the nom de plume of book editor Peter Gethers and mystery novelist David Handler. Like their first one, Gideon, Icarus is relentless in its suspense and pacing. Jack Keller is a likable and believable protagonist. Unfortunately, most of the other characters in the book lack enough depth to be much more than cartoon characters; Keller's wife, in particular, seems like a lonely teenager's fantasy of the ideal woman. Still, as a straightforward action thriller, this book delivers, with enough plot twists and turns to keep the avid mystery reader guessing right up to the end. --Perry M. Atterberry

From the Back Cover:
Advance praise for Icarus:

"Like the master, Alfred Hitchcock, Russell Andrews delights in placing his unsuspecting regular guy heroes in nasty situations. And like the master, he knows how to manipulate the reader in fiendishly exciting ways I defy you to figure out whodunnit, why they dunnit, or how they dunnit."
--Janet Evanovich, author of Hot Six and Seven Up

"Icarus is a tidal wave of a thriller. Russell Andrews, who last delivered with the first-rate Gideon, tops that effort here with a chilling tale of a cornered man. It makes for as good a thriller as any since Frederick Forsyth owned the bestseller list. Icarus is a hands-down winner."
—Lorenzo Carcaterra, author of Sleepers and Gangster

"In this Vertigo for the twenty-first century, Jack Keller journeys through the chic high life and shady low life of trendy America. In his quest for a murderer -- and for relief from his own crippling terrors -- he takes the reader along on an electrifying ride. Author Russell Andrews has written a smart and exhilarating thriller!"
—Susan Isaacs, author of Lily White, Almost Paradise, and Shining Through

"Icarus is the smartest, hippest thriller to come along in years. It is so full of surprises that the only thing you are sure of in the end is that it's even better than Gideon, Russell Andrews's last book. It's got people flying out of windows, crazed suspects all around, and very few characters who are what you think they are. How Oprah missed this I'll never know!"
—Mike Lupica, author of Bump and Run and Jump

"Smart, sexy, scary, and superb -- this thriller has it all. From the shocking opening chapter to the riveting finale, Icarus will leave readers feeling as though they devoured the entire book without once coming up for air. They just don't come any better than this."
—William Bernhard, author of Murder One, Blind Justice, Cruel Justice, Dark Justice, and Deadly Justice

"Russell Andrews's Icarus is furious, sexually fueled, and mind-bending a unique thriller. With subtle undertones of Hitchcock and Silence of the Lambs, Andrews takes the murder mystery genre into unexplored erotic and terrifying territory. Four stars."
—William Diehl, author of Reign in Hell, Thai Horse, The Hunt, Show of Evil, and Primal Fear
