The success of In the Company of My Sisters propelled Julia Boyd into the preeminent class of black female writers expressing the particular voice and concerns of many African American women. Her institution of and membership in the Sister Circle, a self-help group of African American women meeting to discuss and share issues of concern to their unique perspective as women of color, is the source of this new volume. Boyd has incorporated many of the sayings and lessons she picked up during her Sister Circle meetings to share with others. Four major themes are presented within chapters entitled: "Defining Ourselves," "Family, Friends, and Lovers," "In Sickness and Health," and "Over the Back of the Fence." These quotes and affirmations are amusing, insightful, and truthful; also, they allow those unable to join the Sister Circle to benefit from its brand of wisdom.
