From School Library Journal:
Grade 8 Up-- The first revision since 1981, this new edition has been updated to include all of the Reagan years and early information about the Bush presidency. The format includes a separate chapter for each man and a digest section at the end of the regular text. There is a black-and-white illustration or photo of each man and a short (one- to four-page) synopsis of his life and administration, including a look at the way in which he is viewed by historians. The digest section offers biographical information, a list of cabinet members, and presidential election results for each. The chapters through the Truman administration are still Beard's originals, and are in his eloquent, graceful prose. The remaining chapters are done in the same style and fit into the whole without noticeable differences. All are objective, factual, and well written. However, some of the chapters, especially those on Carter and Nixon, do not reflect some of the ways in which their reputations have changed over the last few years. This is a better research source than Miers' America and Its Presidents (Grosset, 1982; o.p.). An outstanding title that should be considered for purchase by all libraries. --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
