Interviews with Yasir Arafat, Nobel Prize-winning novelist Nagib Mahfouz, Egyptian politicans, and average citizens reveal the Arab view of the Mid-East dilemma

From the Author:
A Bridge Through Time( Summit Book, 1984) was Laila Abou- Saif's memoir of her emancipation from the bonds of women in Muslim society. It was banned in Egypt-Lawrence Hill(Chicago,1995)was given a Forward by the famous feminist, Gloria Steinem. Middle East Journal(Scribner, New York, 1991) was also criticized in Egypt because it's author interviewed intelluctuals and artists who were critical of the political status quo in Egypt at the time of the elections for Hosni Mubarak, Also critical ( which makes the book disliked by Egyptian censors) was Abou Saif's concentration on Islamic militants, such as the blind preacher, Sheikh Kisk and the Muslim Sisterhood , militant Zeinab al-Ghazzali. In this book Abou-Saif attempts to take a snapshot of a society, which she knew as a secular and westernized one, being transformed into an islamic society.

Abou Saif, who was educated in the U.S. where she taught at several colleges, believes that she did succeed in taking that still photo-a moment in time, which can never be captured again. The structure of the book is diary form, but the interviews and the voices behind them, such as that of Najib Mahfouz and Yussef Idris, take over.

This is a pro-Arab book. Abou Saif is sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinians and claims to be a Yassir Arafat loyalist. The author also visited Bahgdad and interviewed a Saddam Hussein dissident.

Abou Saif has also directed two documentary films on Islamic sharia and its impact on the condition of women and her second documentary is the only one of its kind, because it shows live footage of an excicision procedure performed in Cairo in 1981.

From Publishers Weekly:
Tumbling from these prolix, unfocused pages are multiple outspoken voices on the fractured Western-Arab relationship that should disturb complacent Americans. An Egyptian now living in the U.S., the author of A Bridge Through Time (as Laila Said) maintains that she presents the transcripts here of her interviews with Arab political and cultural leaders not as anti-Israel propaganda but "simply to give insights to Westerners in order to help them gain a deeper understanding of the Arab-Israeli dilemma." A Marxist journalist tells her that America, Israel and Saudi Arabia promote religious extremism in Egypt; the editor of a Cairo magazine argues that the transformation of Egyptian society from "a productive agricultural society" to one whose "symbols are dictated by American films" was instigated by the Zionists; and Egyptian Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz asserts that he is an admirer of Western culture and that "the Palestinians are the victims of the Arabs before they became the victims of the Israelis." Rhetoric burdens remarks by Yassir Arafat and by the Supreme Guide of the Muslim Sisterhood alike.

For most Americans mystery shrouds the true nature of the political struggles in the Middle East. The author traveled to her native Egypt to write about the human side of the conflicts there. These pages reveal the complex relationships among Israel, Egypt, the Palestinians, and the US as they are seen through the eyes of the Arab world. A clean very presentable copy.
