Their country needed them. About the Author:
Molly Lefebure started her writing career as a newspaper reporter in East London during the Blitz. She is the author of several children's books and a memoir, Murder on the Home Front, which has been adapted for television. She was a Coleridge scholar and wrote two acclaimed books on the poet, and she was also elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2010. She is the author of Blitz!

The destruction of Lorna Washbourne's East Anglian home to build an airfield represents the first of many changes she experiences after the Americans arrive in 1942. Though the Yanks are initially convinced that their air strikes will defeat Hitler quickly, their bravado is replaced by desperation as casualties increase. Lorna's love affair with the base's commander is one of several interconnected plots that weave her experiences with those of three women who had attended secretarial school with her before the war. Much of the action occurs in London, the setting of Lefebure's earlier novel Blitz! (St. Martin's, 1989). Lefebure excels in capturing the physical and social upheaval that war creates and in portraying the intensity of passion engendered by the realization of life's brevity.
