PreS-The spectrum of toddler emotions is explored in this gentle, understated book that catalogs a bear's likes and dislikes. A brief text follows a boy and a bear through their daily routine, describing how the bear likes his breakfast, his outdoor play, his bath, and other activities, as well as offering brief explanations for why this is so. ("If you love a bear, you will know that bears like to be woken up gently. Then they jump out of bed and run to the kitchen to make breakfast. Bears eat a lot more than children do.") Bright, rich colors; lots of white space; and a slightly repetitive text create an intimate atmosphere between the appealing child and his cuddly looking companion. The simplicity of the language and illustrations convey the youngster's sensitivity to a loved one's preferences as well as the playfulness of friendship, and the boy's concern for his friend effectively mimics a caring parent-child relationship. An excellent addition to preschool collections, suitable for one-on-one sharing or reading to small groups.-Tana Elias, Meadowridge Branch Library, Madison, WI
