"An invaluable and engaging tool."—School Library Journal

Since the first American short story was published in 1799, interest in the genre has continued to grow: sales of collections have risen, short story readings proliferate in bookstores, and stories have been increasingly incorporated in the college curriculum.

Engaging and jargon-free, with contributions from a team of scholars, The Facts On File Companion to the American Short Story, Second Edition is the only reference to analyze the genre as a whole. This updated edition to the award-winning original adds hundreds of new entries and more than 100,000 words, providing explanations of major critical controversies and ways to broaden the reader's interpretation of a short story. Entries new to this edition cover younger writers (such as David Foster Wallace, Dave Eggers, and Junot Díaz) and many short stories, from the canonical ("The Killers" by Ernest Hemingway and "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury) to the cutting-edge ("Sea Oak" by George Saunders).

Now available in two volumes, this accessible encyclopedia features an informative introduction that surveys the history of the short story in the United States, interprets the current literary landscape, and points to new and future trends. A bibliography, list of prize-winners, thematic index, and cross-references complete this invaluable guide.

Coverage includes:

  • Author biographies and bibliographies
  • Synopses and analyses of major stories
  • Literary terms, themes, and motifs
  • and more.

From Booklist:
The short story entered a golden age in the twentieth century, and its popularity has continued to grow since then. In its second edition, The Facts On File Companion to the American Short Story presents an accessible and timely analysis of the genre. It updates the original edition, published nine years ago, with more than 200 new entries. Perhaps the most important change is the inclusion of several young writers, such as Junot Díaz and David Foster Wallace; and groundbreaking works, such as Dave Eggers' “Up the Mountain, Coming Down Slowly.” There are also entries for such frequently anthologized stories as Bret Harte's “The Outcasts of Poker Flat.” Editor Werlock has compiled A–Z entries that include biographies of major short story writers, synopsis and analysis of major works and collections, important terms and topics, and much more. Each entry is clearly written for students and lay readers. Entries average half a page in length, and many are followed by bibliographies, often lengthy. Volume 2 contains three appendixes: “Winners of Selected Short Story Prizes,” “Suggested Readings by Theme and Topic,” and “Selected Bibliography.” This is a handy and engaging reference work and would be an excellent addition to any reference collection serving high-school and undergraduate students. Also available as an e-book. --Asia Gross
From School Library Journal:
Grade 10 Up—This alphabetically arranged update covers much the same territory as the 2000 edition, but adds a few new names to the collection of articles about masters of this literary form and their works, such as Dave Eggers and Lorrie Moore. The Americans, and some Canadians, such as Margaret Atwood, span the centuries and the various forms of the genre. Entries on literary stories by Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Herman Melville stand side by side with pieces about science-fiction authors such as Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov. As in the first edition, these volumes also feature articles on African-, Asian-, Hispanic-, Native-American and other minority writers and their stories and themes. Students looking for basic author information, critical analysis, and explanations of literary terms such as "hyperbole," or researching those who were a part of the Harlem Renaissance, will find their needs met here. The various appendixes, including a suggested-reading list by theme and topic, will be useful for further research. These volumes belong on the shelves of libraries serving both short-fiction fans and those who study it.—Carol Fazioli, Gwynedd-Mercy College, Gwynedd Valley, PA
