Eating and exercising habits can have a significant effect on children's heath and behavior. As parents, we feel a responsibility to teach our children about healthy food and physical activity. Yet as parents, we may wonder what should three to six year olds be eating? How can we get our kids to want to eat healthy foods including vegetables?

Do you have kids who are such picky eaters that meals are always a battle? Does your child only like mac 'n cheese, pizza, pasta, or chips. Does your child have a major sweet tooth?

What if you child eats too little? Maybe your kids won't stay at the table. What if their favorite activity is eating and you start to see that your child is gaining too much weight? What should you do if your child just likes to watch TV and play games on their ipad and doesn't like being active?

In this two part book, the story for children will teach kids why they can't just eat what they want. Young children will learn about different types of healthy foods, and how these heathy foods can help them. Children will start to get excited about nutritious food and be much more receptive to a healthy diet.

The guidance section for parents explains the best and most practical ways to change the eating habits of young children. Special sections are dedicated to discussing picky eaters and undereaters and overeaters. Specific guidance and examples are included on how to get kids to eat vegetables, good rules for treats and snacks, how to get your child to stay at the table, and how to help your child to become more active.

About the Author:

Dr. Annye Rothenberg is a child/parent psychologist and mother with more than 25 years of experience helping families with children from birth to age 10 years dealing with typical child-rearing issues. Her experience doing home and school observations means her guidance and insight are specific and realistic in all of her two-part books for parents and their children.

Annye Rothenberg, Ph.D., is a San Francisco Bay Area child/parent psychologist with 25 years of experience and a specialist in child-rearing and child development. Her parenting psychology practice is in Redwood City, CA. She currently guides families with children up through age ten, and her advice is particularly realistic and practical because of her home and school observations. She frequently gives talks to groups of parents as well as teachers and pediatricians. She is, of course, a parent. Her first series of six books focuses on the most common child-rearing issues for preschoolers and their parents. Her new series is for elementary-school children as well as their parents. All of these books have an all-in-one format with a beautifully illustrated, realistic story for children and a comprehensive manual for parents. She is also an adjunct clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine, teaching pediatric residents how to give advice to parents on child-rearing. Dr. Rothenberg spent many years developing and directing an award-winning parenting program in Palo Alto, CA, and has written several books for professionals, including Parentmaking, used throughout the U.S. and Canada for teaching parenting classes. Review:
The content of this book is wonderful! This is one book that all parents of young children should read to their children, with the perfect take-home message for both. It's the best of both worlds an entertaining book for children that successfully introduces them to healthy eating and an informed guide for parents that points out the challenges that food issues can create. The book walks parents through solutions that are easy to apply and will get them securely on the right track. A great resource for health-minded parents and educators.
-- Marilyn Tanner-Blasiar, MHS, RD, LD; Spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association and Pediatric Dietitian, Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis Children's Hospital, St. Louis, MO

Dr. Rothenberg has done it again, this time applying her practical advice and humor to the topic of childhood nutrition. The engaging children's story has made an important impact on our children's understanding of what healthy foods are. And the golden nuggets in the parents section have helped us navigate the difficult, and often emotional, journey of really teaching healthy eating habits, polite table manners, and lifelong exercise routines. Using these techniques has brought joy back into our family mealtimes and our parenting.
-- Ramon and Cynthia Olavarra, parents of four children (ages 6, 4½, 2½ and 10 months)

Concerns about appetites and healthy eating are some of the top parental concerns in my pediatric practice, and for me as a parent. Dr. Annye Rothenberg has come to the rescue! Her newest book provides a story for young children that engages their imagination and teaches about nutrition at just the right level. The section for parents about healthy eating is clear, concise, and full of practical ideas to start using right away. I'm very eager to recommend this book to my patients.
-- Kelly Troiano, MD; Chief of Pediatrics, El Camino Hospital, Mountain View, CA; and mother of two (ages 4 and 6)

Please, give me some advice that will work! This is a common plea from parents struggling with heated issues around eating. They'll be relieved to read this outstanding book with its developmentally appropriate advice. And the engaging story for young children effectively teaches the key messages about healthy eating. Our school has glowing praise for Dr. Rothenberg's real and workable techniques for concerned families.
--Susan Kelly, Director, St. Paul s Nursery School, Burlingame, CA
