Octavo; hardcover; dustwrapper; 316pp., colour plates. New. Remainder. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. The story begins with Caterina Sforza, the illegitimate child of a dissolute, but noble Milanese father. She is tutored in the classics, learns how to ride a horse and hunt, and masters the management skills of a great household. An engagement at age ten is arranged to Girolamo Riario, a debauched military man who happened to be the pope's nephew. His marriage hastily consummated, Girolamo departed for Rome, leaving his bride to her father's care for the next three years. It was only after her father was assassinated that 13-year-old Caterina was packed off to join her husband. She gives birth to her first child at fifteen. As her greedy self-serving husband's health deteriorated, Caterina was barred from one of Forlė's most important fortresses. Despite being 'pregnant up to her throat,' as her contemporaries described her, she plotted the murder of the castle's keeper and recaptured this prize. By the time her husband was assassinated, she was busy governing Forlė and fending off kidnappers and traitors. During one siege on her fortress - the Venetian ambassador, floored by her audacity - when confronted by the spears and daggers aimed at her children, her sister and her mother, called her a tigress, 'willing to eat her young to gain power.' She was also, apparently, a tigress in love. Falling for Giacomo Feo, a glorified stable boy, she had him knighted, secretly married him and bore his child. Blinded by her passion, when Feo was murdered, the sight of his mutilated corpse drove Caterina to systematic vengeance: 38 people were killed, and many others were tortured, exiled or imprisoned in a ruthless, cold-blooded rampage. In her widowhood, Caterina built a sensuous sanctum called Il Paradiso, with high vaulted ceilings, carved columns, painted wall panels planted herbs and began to make beauty creams and medicinal potions. And into this scene of quiet domestic grace came a suitable Medici, Giovanni di Pierfrancesco. She bore him a child. At 35, she was serenely happy, contemplating spiritual matters under the tutelage of a brilliant preacher, Savonarola. Within a year, Caterina's third husband was dead of a fever. Her fortress was attacked by Venice. Machiavelli, sent by the Florentines to negotiate with her was played along and humiliated. But Caterina's greatest enemy proved to be Cesare Borgia, the son of a pope, a man many called 'the Antichrist.' While her people deserted her, Caterina strode out to meet him as he swept in on a white horse. Having fought the battle with breathtaking intensity she was, however, taken prisoner and raped by the sadistic Borgia. She died at the age of 46. 9781908800176.
