"[Lady Aberdeen's] open sympathy with the liberals and her interference in politics were resented by conservatives and were sometimes embarrassing to liberals and to senior civil servants." (Story p. 2) Lady Aberdeen founded the Aberdeen Association to send books and papers to settlers on the prairies, for which the Canadian government gave free postage, organized the National Council of Women in 1893, and assisted in founding the Victorian Order of Nurses in 1897.
