Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A VERY GOOD, bright, clean, tight copy. PROLIFICALLY ILLUSTRATED in black-and-white photography of artworks with accompanying descriptive captions. "The history of Romanticism is.a history of redefinitions." Charles Rosen and Henri Zerner make this their springboard in their thoroughly refreshing and persuasive re-examination of the conceptual background to some of the major 19th century artistic movements, and to Romanticism and Realism, in particular. The early Romantic artists' crucial notion that their art was in permanent opposition to traditional authority, which helps us to undertand their shifting vision of Romanticism, has had its counterpart in the 20th century-the recent avant-garde having inherited it from their Romantic and Realist avant-garde predecessors." 244 pages. GH3.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Unmarked text. Corner crease on back cover. Provides a view of the development of the literature on art in Italy during the Cinquecento. The selections bring out the close relationship between art theories and the actuality of art and chart a trend from a humanistic orientation to a more technical and professorial one. Together, the documents and the commentary reveal the effects that humanistic circles, the courts, and the Church (during the High Renaissance as well as the Counter-Reformation) had on the way people thought and wrote about art in that splendid century. 195p. Index.
