Softcover. Condition: Good. This biography of Ramakrishna was written for the West by one of England's most talented authors. The writing is beautiful in itself, but the story of a most unusual man with unheard of spiritual yearning is what this book is really about.Excerpt: "This is the story of a phenomenon. I will begin by calling him simply that, rather than "holy man,""mystic,"or "saint"; all emotive words with mixed associations which may attract some readers, repel others."A phenomenon is always a fact, an object of experience. That is how I shall try to approach Ramakrishna . . . I only ask you to approach Ramakrishna with the same open-minded curiosity you might feel for any highly unusual human being."

The edition on this page is out of print. The Spiritual Heritage of India is a brief history of the philosophy of a country that has never distinguished philosophy from religion. The account extends from centuries of which there is no historical record to the recent Sri Ramakrishna revival of the ancient Vedanta. This book brings together in one volume the spiritual magnificence of the sacred books such as the Vedas, the Upanishads, and the Bhagavad Gita, three ancient Indian scriptures which are the foundation of the Hindu spiritual heritage. In connection with each of the subjects taken up the author supplies sufficient quotation from the texts concerned, as incidental illustration and sometimes also as appended passages, to give body and force to the exposition. His approach is clear and practical, and at the same time profound and richly poetic. This book takes the reader on a journey through the wisdom enshrined in these celebrated classics. This book is both an excellent introduction for readers who are coming to the subject for the first time, and a series of meditations for those who already know it well. The author has ably entered into these ancient Indian treasure-houses of spirituality and offer their ancient wisdom to the modern spiritual seeker. About the Author Swami Prabhavananda was one of the pioneer swamis sent to America by the direct disciples of Ramakrishna to build on the work started by Swami Vivekananda at the turn of the century. The swami was born in India on December 26, 1893. Softcover. Condition: Good. Ramanuja is a noted commentator on Vedanta from the Vaisnava point of view. In Ramanuja's interpretation of Vedanta, devotion to God and his grace are stressed as the exclusive means for release from the cycle of birth and death. Ramanuja is not as well known as Shankara, but his teachings are important for Vedanta students. With text in Devanagari and English rendering, and index of first lines of verses.Ramanuja (traditionally, 1017-1137 CE ) was a Hindu theologian, philosopher, and one of the most important exponents of the Sri Vaishnavism tradition within Hinduism. He was born in a Tamil Brahmin family in the village of Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. His philosophical foundations for devotionalism were influential to the Bhakti movement.
