Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Muirhead Bone (illustrator). 1st Edition. Following their earlier book on London, "London Perambulator" (1925), the brothers Bone again give their impressions of the great capital. Journalist James writes of the history, architecture, and people of London; of the old shops and the hotels; the restaurants and pubs. Sir Muirhead, known particularly as a war artist, provides 24 illustrations. This is just about a very good copy, with some slight mottled damp staining to foredge of the boards and a little browning and spotting to endpapers. Internally excellent. The dust jacket, while basically complete and unclipped, is browned and edgeworn with chips to top of spine. The spine panel has lost its hold on the front panel for all but the lower two inches of its length. Looks OK behind the acetate.

Playwright, poet, and novelist, he is best known for his Booker Prize-winning "Saville" (1976). This is a near fine copy with a little browning to edges, in a near fine dust jacket.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. What we have here is a 38 page booklet, perfect bound into cream wrappers, put out by the publisher, in collaboration with a bookseller and wholesaler, to act as a promotional blad for the upcoming novel. Clarke's "The Chymical Wedding" (his second novel) went on to win the Whitbread Prize. The blad, "An Open Invitation to The Chymical Wedding", presents the first two chapters of the book with a little publicity information on the back cover. A fine booklet. MC.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First edition thus. Housman tells the story of Queen Victoria in 47 small playlets, selections from three previous volumes. Lovely drawings and dust jacket design by Ernest Shepard. Although a book club edtion, from the early years of Alan Bott's Reprint Society, this appears to be a true first edition of this selection, with the trade edition from Jonathan Cape coming a couple of years later. This is in red cloth boards with the familiar spine title in its black panel. Top edge stained black. Very slightly cocked, and a production flaw left two pages untrimmed at the top corners. Edges and endpapers are a little browned, but a very good copy in a good plus, somewhat browned dust jacket with wear and tears to extremities and a long tear down the rear gutter.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Alan Lee (illustrator). 1st Edition. Pictorial laminated boards. This good, meaty medieval story brings together two great talents, which is what's needed for the best of picture books. Great writing from Joan Aiken and superb pictures from Oscar-winner, Alan Lee. There's not all that many opportunities for acquiring examples of Lee's artwork and, for my money, that makes this book pretty special. Boards are very slightly rubbed, extremities have minimal wear, and there is one tiny little ding on foredge of upper cover. A very good copy, as issued, without a dust jacket. (The U.S. edition from Knopf had a dust jacket; this original Cape edition did not.).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First U.K. edition. The first book by this somewhat eccentric writer, journalist, and magazine editor. He had been contributing stories to magazines, chiefly 'The New Yorker", since 1963 and most of the fourteen stories in this collection were printed first in various periodicals. On my usual skim through a volume of stories, looking for a great opening line, I found this one: "This is my predicament: there is a Cheerio on the bath mat and no one will pick it up." This not only gets the story "A Blessed Day" off to an interesting start, but it seems an apt sentence for a man known for his gentle eccentricities. First published in the U.S. by Random House, the previous year, this first U.K. printing is a very good copy. There is some fading on the spine, and a name and address on front endpaper, otherwise it's in great shape. The dust jacket is also very good, with darkened spine panel, and minor wear and nicks at head of spine. MC.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Edwin Baker (illustrator). 1st Edition. 32 pages, including wrappers printed with drawings by Edwin Baker, bound with red silk cord. Contains 12 short descriptions of wonderfully clichéd literary characters, including "The Earnest Reviewer", "The Unpublishable Novelist" and "The Publisher's Adviser". These little sketches are reprinted from Jonathan Cape's in-house journal, "Now & Then" and although no author is credited it is easy to see the wit of the journal's editor, and Cape's reader, Daniel George, at work here. This little booklet was printed at the Alden Press on Spalding & Hodge mould-made paper and published privately by Cape for distribution to their "friends" for Christmas 1954. Covers are slightly browned, red cord has faded to brown, but a very good copy indeed. Reduced shipping cost will apply.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Hans Tisdall (illustrator). 1st Edition. 20 pages stapled into card wrappers with illustrations front and back by Hans Tisdall. This is one of the cute little booklets privately printed by Cape for distribution as a Christmas "keepsake" to friends and supporters of the publishing house. It comprises seven short literary conversations, uncredited but certainly penned by Daniel George, Cape's reader and the editor of the in-house journal "Now & Then", from where these sketches are taken. Slight browning and rubbing to wrappers, but a very good copy indeed. Reduced shipping cost will apply.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Boy! Did this guy ever have a varied and disparate literary output? Here, we travel pretty far away from the cute, cozy books on cats or gardens for which he is particularly known. This is a book on parapsychology; "an overview of paranormal phenomena" is how the Beverley Nichols website describes it. Having experienced a premonition of the JFK assassination, Nichols began to take a journalistic interest in people who seemed "in touch" with dowsing, faith-healing, clairvoyance, premonitions, telepathy and other parts of these "mysterious regions". In an attempt to address the skeptics mantra of "extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof", he writes only of what he himself witnessed or experienced (although a few episodes have other "reliable witnesses"). Whether he achieves that requirement will very much depend on your inclination to believe this stuff or not. The American edition used the term "X-Factor" to label the phenomena described, a moniker not used in this first edition. There is minimal softening to base of spine, but a near fine copy in a very good dust jacket indeed, just slightly worn and nicked at top of spine and with a small, hardly noticeable area of damp damage to top of front panel, not really affecting an interesting design by Jan Pienkowski. This is a fairly early piece of work by this artist who went on to do some really interesting jackets and illustrative work with Cape.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Eduardo Vicente (illustrator). First edition in English. Someone just told me that Andras Laszlo is a Hungarian soccer player. I think it must be a different Andras Laszlo! This book - a meaty and uncompromising story is, ostensibly, a children's book. First published in Spain in 1956 and translated here from the Spanish by Isabel Quigly. Lots of delightful, full page illustrations printed in sepia. There was a Spanish movie of the book called, variously, "Pepote", "Mi tio Jacinto" or "Uncle Hyacynth". What I don't quite understand about this copy is that it's a softcover. I've never seen this book, a Cape first edition from 1958, in anything other than a hardcover, originally with a dust jacket. Could this copy be an "advance" copy or proof? If so there is no other indication. Anyway, a very good, large format paperback, just slightly browned around the edges. MC.
