Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Alan Baker (illustrator). 'In early 1998 I went to Perth in Western Australia in order to attend the literature festival, and part of the arrangement was that I should go to Karratha to do their first ever literary dinner. Karratha is a mining town a long way further north. The landscape is extraordinary, being composed of vast heaps of dark red earth and rock poking out of the never-ending bush. I imagine that Mars must have a similar feel to it. I went exploring and discovered the bronze statue to Red Dog outside the town of Dampier. I felt straight away that I had to find out more about this splendid dog. A few months later I returned to Western Australia and spent two glorious weeks driving around collecting Red Dog stories and visiting the places that he knew, writing up the text as I went along. I hope my cat never finds out that I have written a story to celebrate the life of a dog.'. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The narrator of Youth, a student in the South Africa of the 1950s, has long been plotting an escape from his native country: from the stifling love of his mother, from a father whose failures haunt him, and from what he is sure is impending revolution. Studying mathematics, reading poetry, saving money, he tries to ensure that when he arrives in the real world, wherever that may be, he will be prepared to experience life to its full intensity, and transform it into art. Arriving at last in London, however, he finds neither poetry nor romance. Instead he succumbs to the monotony of life as a computer programmer, from which random, loveless affairs offer no relief. Devoid of inspiration, he stops writing. An awkward colonial, a constitutional outsider, he begins a dark pilgrimage in which he is continually tested and continually found wanting. Set against the background of the 1960s - Sharpeville, the Cuban missile crisis, Vietnam - Youth is a remarkable portrait of a consciousness, isolated and adrift, turning in on itself. J.M. Coetzee explores a young man's struggle to find his way in the world with tenderness and a fierce clarity. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Elizabeth Costello is an Australian writer of international renown; she is f-ted, studied, honoured. Famous principally for an early novel that established her reputation and from which, it seems, she will never escape, she has reached the stage, late in life, where her remaining function is to be venerated and applauded. One of a new breed of intellectual nomads, her life has become a series of engagements in sterile conference rooms throughout the world - a private consciousness obliged to reveal itself to a curious public: the presentation of a major award at an American college where she is required to deliver a lecture; a sojourn as the writer in residence on a cruise liner during which she encounters a fellow guest lecturer, an African poet also employed to divert the passengers; a visit to her sister, a missionary in Africa, who is receiving an honorary degree, an occasion which both recognise as the final opportunity for effecting some form of reconciliation; and a disquieting appearance at a writers' conference in Amsterdam where she finds the subject of her talk unexpectedly amongst the audience. She has made her life's work the study of other people yet now it is she who is the object of scrutiny. But, for her, what matters is the continuing search for a means of articulating her vision and the verdict of future generations. Elizabeth Costello is a humane, moral, and uncompromising creation; J. M. Coetzee's latest work of fiction offers us a profound and delicate vision of literary celebrity, artistry and the private life of the mind. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Murdoch's gamble is to change the way the world communicates. His plan will establish himself as the most powerful media figure on the planet and put him in direct conflict with Bill Gates. With time running out, Murdoch must be at Gates to the Premier League television rights, then float the world's biggest satellite platform on Wall Street before the market falls over. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This study attempts an exploration and recreation of the life of Kafka, not so much its daily events, but rather what went on in his mind, and the continuous process by which Kafka lived his stories and made his works lexical mirrors of his own private life. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The landscape is flawless, the trees majestic, the flora and the fauna are right and proper, the whole is picturesquely typical of rural England at its best. Sir Giles, an MP of few principles and curius tastes, plots to destroy all this by building a motorway smack through it, to line his own pocket and at the same time to dispose of his wife, the capacious Lady Maude. Sir Giles recruits to his side Hoskins, a corrupt local official, Lord Leakham, the environment equivalent of a hanging judge, and Dundridge, a troublesome bureaucrat with an unhealthy passion for order. Against this powerful lobby are ranged a mere handful of local residents led by Lady Maude. Hardly at first sight a team to withstand the batteries of official inertia, Compulsory Purchase Orders and bulldozer blades. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This text ranges widely across the Atlantic World that Caryl Phillips has charted in his novels and non-fiction books since 1980. Phillips begins by introducing the reader to books by such authors as James Baldwin, Joseph Conrad and Richard Wright. He then goes on to reflect on the work of such seminal figures as Derek Walcott, V.S. Naipaul and Nadime Gordimer. This collection of essays is not, however, limited to the literary. The author goes in search of Steven Spielberg, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Marvin Gaye. He writes about the moment when St Kitts, the small island of his birth, became independent and talks about the role and responsibility of being a writer born into a post-colonial world who lives on both sides of the Atlantic. In the final section of the book, the author turns the spotlight on Britain and examines the country that formed and educated him, speculating about his parents migration to Britain in the late 1950s, the continued legacy of racism, his own helpless loyalty to Leeds United, and his anxieties at feeling as though he is both of, and not of, Britain. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Ruben Oliver's life is coming adrift from its moorings. He has been obliged to take early retirement from his job as a librarian due to 'rationalisation' and the new political realities of South Africa. His wife has died. One of his sons has settled in Australia, the other is about to emigrate to Canada while trying to persuade Ruben that it is too dangerous to remain. His best friend and neighbour, Johnny MacFarlane, has been brutally murdered. The only constants are his old family home in the suburbs of Cape Town, haunted by the ghost of a young slave woman; and his housekeeper, Magrieta, with whom he has a shared history that goes back more than half his life. Tessa Butler comes out of the rain one night in response to an advertisement for a lodger. Ruben is captivated by this beautiful young stranger. She restores passion to his life, but brings with her a turbulent past and a complex love life as well as demons from the world outside his home. Through her he gains a troubling view of female sexuality - its ghosts and bones and brazenness. The Rights of Desire is a meditation on ageing and on love, on loneliness and fulfilment, on guilt and innoce. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Lynn Pan's journey of discovery begins at her father's grave in London and takes her to her native Shanghai, to Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and finally Chinese Turkestan, as she traces the encroachment of the past on the present. Past and present were severed by Shanghai's fall to communism. In trying to reconstruct family experiences bestriding that divide, the author is led to troubling revelations about her grandfather and father, and about the disaster which befell those around them - above all Hanze, the old family retainer, who paid for his loyalty with 24 years of penal labour. Pan takes fragments of these lives and pursues them through the years of Japanese occupation, of revolution and exile. She evokes the Shanghai of the '40s and '50s, the terrible fates of the women of earlier generations, lives governed by a sense of fatedness and bruised by addiction to opium, the bitter struggle for survival in forced-labour camps. But it is Hanze who constitutes the heart of the story, who becomes Pan's guide and link to earlier generations, and whose unshaken belief in the time-hallowed bond between master and servant connects the living with the dead, the old world and the new. Lynn Pan's other books include "Sons of the Yellow Emperor", which won the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition.
